League leaders the Ammies claimed a 5-2 win, but were run close by a Volunteer side who pushed the former champions all the way in an entertaining match at Wythenshawe Amateurs FC. The Ammies also claimed the Gallon on the night, but were given a sign of whats to come as they were pushed all the way to a deciding leg.

The hosts wasted no time getting on top, as Ray Dore opened the night with a commanding 3–0 win over James Roberts, firing in six ton-plus scores and a 20-darter before Pete Watson followed up with another straight-legs win, beating Christopher Grinnell 3–0 with a 22-dart leg, though Grinnell played his part with five 100s in defeat.

Volunteer struck back through Tony Grinnell in game 3, who landed six tons and an 18-dart leg to beat Ewan Donegan 3–1, and feathers were ruffled soon after as The Vol levelled the match at 2–2 in game 4 thanks to Gary Williams, who took out Massive Mike Morrison 3–1 in a quality contest — both players averaging over 65 and each with six 100+ scores, with Williams producing a 17-dart leg while Morrison replied with a 19-darter of his own.

But from that point, Ammies took control. Paul Devine restored the lead in game 5, brushing aside Dan O’Donnell 3–0 with four tons, an 18-dart leg and a 93 finish, before Karl Cooper settled the match when he made it 4–2 with a nervy 3–2 win over Toni Williams, which included a 19-dart leg and a 180 – but Toni played her part with a solid 5 100+ scores to rattle the usually unflappable Coops.

Callum Nolan extended the winning margin further defeating Karl Bannister 3–2 in the final game of the night, landing a 16-darter and four tons, while Bannister responded with a 180. The Vol can take heart from a fine effort against the Ammies, and with performances like that they will no doubt start getting some wins under their belts.
